King George School is a sanctuary of learning and growth for bright young people who are having difficulty succeeding in a traditional high school environment. Emphasizing visual and performing art as a vehicle for personal expression and creativity, King George School inspires 9th-12th graders to become life learners who honor and value themselves and their families.
King George School is a place of opportunity and hope. Past problems are not always indicative of future performance, especially within the framework of the King George School. Students who have experienced problems in more traditional high school settings often succeed beyond expectation in the nurturing, structured environment. With an emphasis on personal growth as well as academic excellence, students receive the skills they need to make healthy choices in pursuing solutions to their problems. Both student life staff and teaching faculty give personal attention to students as they process and learn from past circumstances. Creative, bright students who have struggled with issues of self-esteem, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, ADHD, NVLD, mild to moderate substance abuse, grief and loss, and adoption issues do well at King George.
The academic program at the King George School is designed for intelligent students who are college bound. Classes are structured to include both academic strength and creative learning. Each class includes a mix of traditional instruction and projects designed to challenge and engage the nontraditional learner. The fully integrated curriculum places equal weight on excellent academics, personal development, and the creative process. Visual and performing arts are key components of King George School’s curriculum. Through artistic expression students learn to apply the concepts and skills they use in the arts to all other aspects of their lives. Art instruction and development features experiences in theater, visual and tactile arts, dance, music, chorus, voice and photography. At King George every moment has the potential to be therapeutic and transformative. Students capitalize on personal strengths and shift focus from past labeling and criticism. They begin to improve relationships with adults and peers and create a foundation of resiliency and self-understanding for future success. Through the integration of innovative clinical services, alternative educational approaches, a dynamic student life program, and an infusion of the arts, students consistently graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed as healthy young adults.
